Shuttle Shuffle

Good day, everyone:

This past weekend, I spent a wonderful day in New York City covering parts of their transit system in Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, and Queens. There will be three parts to this coverage, starting with the Shuttle services.

Due to construction along parts of three subway lines, passengers had to use buses to cover part of their voyage. The Q line in Brooklyn, the 5, line in the Bronx, and the 7 line in Manhattan and Queens.

Buses from several depots were used to coverage the interrupted service and ranged from RTSs to Novabus artics. Posted below is several photos from this event. Enjoy!

Orion V #6080 on a local route sits across from New Flyer C40LF #405 on the Q Shuttle at Prospect Park Station.

With so many buses, some had to park on the street before it was their turn to pick up passengers.

Novabus RTS #9637 drops off passengers outside the south end of the station.

Even buses normally used for the Select Bus Service BRT lines were drafted for this shuttle.

Split into an local and express branch, 9603 is pictured operating on the express route in the Midwood section of Brooklyn along Coney Island Avenue

The local branch operated along Ocean Avenue, which for the most part paralleled the line. 9508 passes a pair of construction workers on its way to Kings Highway Station.

New Flyer C40LF #384 followed close by as most buses traveled in pairs.

Once I departed from Brooklyn, it was onto Queens and the 7 line shuttle. In an effort to have the line run fully by a computer system with newer trains, the 7 line has had disrupted service on and off most of the year. The Manhattan side of the line into Queensboro Plaza was shut down this go-round.

Pictured in R188 #7225 arriving at Queensboro Plaza to a swarm of passengers making connections to the shuttle and to return to Queens.

Below on the street were several buses taking passengers who had to travel to Vernon-Jackson and Hunts Points Avenue Station to continue or finish their trip.

As a double whammy, nearby construction forced vehicles onto nearby 42nd Road. Orion VII Next Gen #4673 had just gotten the all clear from the traffic officer to proceed.

Meanwhile first generation hybrid #6481 is pictured leaving the departure point for the shuttle at 27th Street.

After this, it was to the Bronx for the 5 line shuttle, which operated from 180th Street station to the end of the line at Dyre Avenue.

Half of New Flyer D60HF Galaxy #5567 turns off from dropping off passengers for the operator to take her break.

A street supervisor reviews his papers as Orion VII CNG #7670 awaits passengers for its next trip to Dyre Avenue.

A sign quirk made this photo more interesting. Pictured is C40LF #309 sporting the 5 as both a number and a bullet.

Shuttle buses were operating on Williamsbridge road, where I exited on Pelham Parkway for the nearby Bx12 line.

Orion V #6215 leaves the shuttle stop that it shares with local route Bx8.

Lastly, #7700 is pictured with beautiful blue sky in the background.

Stay tuned for part II...
